State should collaborate with private sector for economic growth: FNCCI president

POKHARA: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Anjan Shrestha on Saturday urged the state to adopt a more positive and collaborative approach with the private sector to drive economic development. He called for policy stability, facilitation rather than heavy regulation, and measures to convert Nepal's demographic dividend into domestic production and jobs.

Addressing 36th convention and 72nd annual general meeting (AGM) of Pokhara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, FNCCI President Shrestha said a business-friendly environment is essential for the nation's growth and stated that excessive regulation and control discourage investment.

He suggested a public-private partnership (PPP) model to restart industries that have been closed for extended periods and stressed the need to create domestic employment so fewer young workers seek jobs abroad.

Addressing legislative concerns, Shrestha said rushed lawmaking creates significant hurdles for businesses and urged authorities to allow sufficient time and consultation during policy formulation. He disclosed that the FNCCI is pushing for an integrated tax code and is preparing a draft law on credit transactions to present to the government shortly.

Turning to recent natural disasters, Shrestha called for a fundamental shift in planning, highlighting the severe damage caused by recurring environmental crises. He said, "There has been huge loss of life and property due to floods, landslides and natural disasters. In this situation, the time has come to think long‑term when constructing our infrastructure. Along with rescue and relief, attention must be paid to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of affected families and industries and businesses." He added that "during disasters, rescue is carried out by the government, while support comes from the private sector."

To support recovery efforts, the FNCCI has appealed to international partners and around 70 overseas chambers of commerce. Shrestha urged climate‑resilient infrastructure, proposed collaboration with China to reduce risks from glacial lake outburst floods, and demanded international compensation for climate‑induced losses in Nepal. He said the FNCCI is seeking the effective operation of the Korala border crossing with China following disruptions at two major trade routes and noted that technical feasibility studies are required after talks with the Chinese ambassador.

Shrestha outlined the FNCCI's '6 Pillars, 60 Initiatives' strategy to enhance private sector capacity and competitiveness and called for joint public-private action to boost exports and promote domestic youth entrepreneurship. He urged the establishment of regular international flights from Pokhara and Bhairahawa international airports and said the federation is preparing to hold talks with the tourism minister while pressing for expanded infrastructure and services tailored to Indian tourists.
